Starý Smokovec

Starý Smokovec (990 altitude) – the tourist and administrative centre of the High Tatras was founded under the peak Slavkovský štít (2452) and is important traffic junction for directions: Tatranská Lomnica, Poprad and Štrbské Pleso. The settlement is the oldest one also. The settlement is the centre for retail, several accommodation facilities, restaurants, banks, exchange office, ski rental services, groceries and shops.
In the half of the 19th century the settlement development has started. The more hotels, restaurants and spas were built; the more Starý Smokovec became attractive for public. In the year 1908 the cable car to Hrebienok was established. Hrebienok is the favorite place for tourists and starting point to the waterfall Vodopády Studeného potoka , linking the most frequent mountain valleys – Veľká and Malá Studená dolina, to the mountain lake Skalnaté Pleso or the peak Slavkovský štít. The dominating feature of Starý Smokovec, the luxury hotel Grandhotel, was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Starý Smokovec was originally settled around mineral springs, which are very popular until now.
